RECORDING MENTOR

COMPLETE APPRENTICE AUTOBIOGRAPHIES & PROGRESS

DAVID E.

My name is David E. I am a native of Nashville. Growing up, I've been confronted with the question, "What do you want to do when you grow up?" many times. It's a tricky one to answer. When I was younger I would usually say, "I don't know."

I've always loved music and so when some friends at school wanted to start a band, I instantly joined. We were all about thirteen and needless to say fairly irresponsible. I found myself working as the trombone player, sound man, promoter, and booking agent, carrying much of the weight. I learned quickly that there is much more to making music than simply playing.

At this point in time, when people asked what I wanted to do with my life, my answer was, "Something involved with music that pays the bills."

My brother was also into music. He had a four-track recorder. He had me help him make recordings. I took it as an opportunity to learn about the four-track. I was extremely fascinated with the way you could manipulate the sound to achieve different effects and even different moods... something I never had much time to experiment with in the live setting of playing in my band. I started using the four-track for my own purposes and found that I enjoyed the technical side of recording as much as playing the music.

Then I heard about the Apprentice/Mentor program and found it to be just the opportunity I needed.
